Encouragement for Single Christians
Short readings for Christian singles
As a new Christian 30+ years ago I often wondered why Paul would intimate that to be single as Christian is actually a better state to be in than married or courting. In fact, many of my Christian friends would argue how he couldn't possibly mean that as it was so obvious that being married was and is obvioulsy the natural state of man and women since the Graden of Eden.
Paul then gives what appares a sort of caveate and says that if you are attempting to remain single but find that you cannot bear the burden, it is not a sin to marry - as if it's second best options! "Better to switch to the other way of life God honors than to be aflame with lust."
The point is - it was never about first or second 'best' options - it's about who and what you are and who God created you to be - there is NOTHING lower about being marriaed as opposed to unmarried - however - being unmarried DOES - simply form a time point of view - allow you to focus on God and intercession for people and nations more often and in a sense more fully. And guess what... that's what Paul says!
But one position is not looked upon by god as more sacred than another - but Paul does wish more people were able to resisit the urge to marry - as Our Lord did (had to do to fully deny himself and take up his cross). But this is no way denegrates or lowers any service my married people towards God - in that sense if you are marriaed and find time for God - you are special! Bringing up dodly families is absolutley paramount to God.
It seems obvious - why didn't I see it before? Well, probably because I was imature as a Christian, and I hadn't really taken to heart the part of The Bible says about "picking up your cross and following me."

Isaiah
“Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you;
therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you.
For the Lord is a God of justice;
blessed are all those who wait for him.” -Isaiah 30:18
“You shall have a song as in the night when a holy festival is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one sets out to the sound of the flute to go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.” -Isaiah 30:29
“Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without its mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his spirit has gathered them.” -Isaiah 34:16
“Do not fear, for I am with you,
do not be afraid, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10

hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, ‘Do not fear,
I will help you.'” -Isaiah 41:13
“But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.” -Isaiah 43:1-2

let the wicked forsake their way,

let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.” -Isaiah 55:6-9
